What to see and do in Amsterdam

It is definitely the city of freedom and one of my favourite places I have visited so far.

Many people consider Amsterdam as the city of canals, tulips, coffeeshops and Red Light district, but the truth is that this city is much more than this: It offers a wide variety of museums, being the most important ones Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum, and also countless art galleries. The architecture of the city is absolutely fascinating, mixing the beautiful small houses with 165 canals and 1.500 bridges.

Once you book your tickets to Amsterdam,  the first thing you should do is to find a hotel where you want to stay. I already have a great recommendation for you: CitizenM, it’s an absolutely amazing place, and I recommend it 100%. An alternative you should consider when looking for a cool place to stay a bit more in the centre is The Hoxton.

Once you leave your luggage in the hotel, it’s time to discover the city.
I started my first day with a visit to the Museumplein, where the three major museums of the Netherlands are located: the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, and Stedelijk Museum.  At the same place you can also find the famous letters of I Amsterdam, the symbol of the city and one of the most visited tourist attractions.

My second stop was the center of the city, the Dam Square, where you can visit the Royal Palace and the famouse Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum. As I went there during the Christmas holidays, everything was decorated with beautiful christmas lights and it was really beautiful.

My third and probably most iconic destination was de 9 Straatjes (The 9 Streets), crossing all the beautiful canals and enjoying absolutely amazing views. Luckily, when I was in the city, they were celebrating the Light Festival, so I found lot’s of original lights, like these three freedom statues floating in the canal or the big writting, “Today I Love You”.

I stopped to have a coffee at a very nice place named Brix, the food was really good and it’s in my list of places to visit in Amsterdam.

I also visited the emblematic Red Light District, where you can find many tourists enjoying Amsterdam’s night life. It’s not necessary to say that it’s a must visit of the city.

When I’m traveling, I like to try the food of each country, so one day I went to a very special place to taste some typical (or not very typical) food of the Netherlands. Foodhallen is an indoor foodmarket, where you have different street food stands, and you can visit and try all of them. Everything was delicious and I absolutely recommend it.

For Fashion lovers Amsterdam is a really good place to go shopping. I found some really cool shops and could not resist to get some new goodies.

In general I had a wonderful stay in this amazing city. I really loved it and can’t wait to go back and visit all these places and discover many others. If you never have been there, you definitely should go, and I hope this post will be useful for your next visit.
